BYU rolls past Gonzaga, 87-69

The BYU Cougars surprisingly dominated in an impressive, 87-69 win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Despite drawing a lot of attention from the Gonzaga defenders, Jimmer Fredette still poured in 34 points.

Four different Cougars finished in double figures, and the team bombed in 14 three-point shots.

They shot 50 percent from behind the arc, and when BYU’s shooters are on target from long range, they are very hard to beat. (Read More…)

Cougars, Fredette shake off Wofford in NCAA opener

By Bud L. Ellis

It took a little bit of time for the Brigham Young Cougars and super-scorer Jimmer Fredette to get going in their NCAA tournament opener Thursday night.

But by the time things were finished, Fredette had another high-scoring game and the Cougars were on their way to the third round of the NCAAs. Fredette, the nation’s leading scorer, pumped home 32 points as BYU downed Wofford 74-66 in the NCAA Southeast regional in Denver. (Read More…)

BYU stomped by San Diego State, 72-54

The BYU Cougars finally fell victim to the San Diego State Aztecs in a 72-54 loss in the Mountain West conference championship game.

Jimmer Fredette scored 30 points and grabbed six rebounds but did not shoot the ball particularly well, especially early, allowing the Aztecs to build a big lead.

The Cougars were in catch-up mode almost the entire afternoon, and they don’t really have the firepower around Fredette to climb back from large deficits.

BYU has dominated San Diego State in recent years, including two wins this season, so it only seemed like a matter of time until the Aztecs turned the tables. (Read More…)

BYU stunned by New Mexico, 82-64

In their first game without their starting center, the BYU Cougars stumbled in an 82-64 loss to the New Mexico Lobos.

To lose by that much on their home floor to a team like New Mexico, it was clear that the Cougars were not focused on the task at hand.

Jimmer Fredette didn’t shoot well but still finished with 33 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals.

He only shot 1-9 from three-point range, and he didn’t get near enough help from the rest of his teammates. (Read More…)

Cougars ride week of ups and downs

By Bud L. Ellis

It has been a difficult week for Brigham Young University, one full of the wildest swings of emotions.

First, there was the thrill of ascending to No. 3 in the nation in the ESPN/USA Today national rankings. Then came word that Brandon Davies, the team’s leading rebounder, would be suspended for violating the school’s honor code. (Read More…)

BYU takes down San Diego State again, 80-67

For the second time this season, the BYU Cougars took down the San Diego State Aztecs, this time on the road in an impressive 80-67 victory.

Jimmer Fredette didn’t play his best game of the season but still managed to finish with 25 points and nine assists.

While Fredette didn’t have his best shooting night, the attention and constant double teams that came his way allowed him to feed the ball to wide-open teammates.

It’s the third straight season that BYU has swept San Diego State, and it probably didn’t hurt that they went an insane 14-24 from three-point range. (Read More…)

BYU sails past UNLV, 78-64

The BYU Cougars took advantage of another big night from Jimmer Fredette to earn a 78-64 win over the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels.

Fredette came alive in the second half and scored 29 points, including a 16-16 night at the free throw line.

The star guard said pregame talk that he is a ball-hog and that he is a one-man show didn’t bother him.

Instead, the deadly shooter elected to let his play do the talking, and his team ultimately emerged victorious. (Read More…)

BYU becomes independent

The BYU Cougars have left the Mountain West Conference to become independent in an effort to promote Mormonism.

With the move, BYU would be independent in football but would rejoin the Western Athletic Conference in all other sports.

When in-state rival Utah left the conference for the Pac-10 earlier this summer, BYU started exploring the possibility of becoming independent.

The Cougars were disappointed that they were never given an invitation to the Pac-10 or the Big-12. (Read More…)
